How it works

A cumulative fixed deposit adds interest to the balance, so later interest is earned on earlier interest. Most Indian banks compound quarterly; choose another frequency if your deposit uses one.

FD interest is taxed at your slab rate. Banks deduct TDS when interest from a bank exceeds ₹50,000 in a year (₹1 lakh for senior citizens), unless you submit Form 15G or 15H where eligible.

Formula

Maturity = P × (1 + r ÷ k)^(k × t)

  • P — deposit
  • r — yearly rate
  • k — compounding periods a year (4 for quarterly)
  • t — years

Questions

What is the difference between cumulative and payout FDs?

A cumulative FD adds interest to the deposit and pays everything at maturity. A payout FD pays interest monthly or quarterly and returns only the deposit at the end, so it earns less in total.

Do senior citizens get more?

Usually 0.25–0.5% a year more. Enter your bank's senior-citizen rate to see the difference.
